Many people may look confused when they hear this name, what is it? I haven't heard of it! Even those who have some understanding of cars may have only heard of this name, but they don't really know what it does specifically. So today, let's learn about it together! The vacuum pump inside a car generally exists to provide assistance to the vehicle; it is an essential component. For those who are not very familiar with it, for the sake of your beloved car, it is best to understand what this thing does inside the car, what its working principle is, and how to maintain it. Only by understanding it can you know how to take the best care of it.
1: Introduction to the vacuum pump. The braking system of the family cars we usually use mainly relies on hydraulic pressure as the medium for transmission. Compared to a pneumatic braking system that can provide power, it requires an auxiliary system to assist the driver in braking, and the vacuum braking assist system can also be called the vacuum servo system.
It first uses human-powered hydraulic braking, and then adds another source of braking capability to assist it. This allows both braking systems to work together, providing an energy system. Under normal circumstances, it mainly outputs the pressure generated by the power servo system, but when it cannot work properly, it can still be driven by human power to assist the hydraulic system.
2: Working principle. Regarding its source, it can mainly be discussed from the following points. First, cars equipped with gasoline engines generally use spark ignition, so a relatively large vacuum pressure can be generated in the intake manifold. This can provide enough vacuum source for the vacuum-assisted braking system. However, for vehicles driven by diesel engines, because their engines use compression ignition, they cannot provide the same level of vacuum pressure at the intake manifold. This is where a vacuum pump that can provide a vacuum source is needed. Additionally, engines designed to meet certain automotive emission and environmental requirements also need it to provide sufficient vacuum source to ensure the vehicle can operate normally.
3: Symptoms of damage. Its main function is to utilize the vacuum generated by the engine during operation to provide sufficient assistance when the driver steps on the brake, allowing the driver to feel lighter and more effective when pressing the brake. However, once the vacuum pump is damaged, it lacks a certain level of assistance, so pressing the brake will feel heavier, and the braking effect will also decrease, sometimes even failing to work, indicating that the vacuum pump has been damaged. However, the vacuum pump is generally not repairable, so once it is damaged, it can only be replaced with a new one.
But it is essential to ensure its working performance to maintain the normal operation of your beloved car. Only by understanding these can you better protect it, allowing it to serve you longer. Especially in electric vehicles, it plays the role of an air pump, highlighting its importance.
